Kozhikode: In light of a recent Nipah infection-related death in Malappuram district, a resident of Othayi in Edavanna panchayat has been hospitalized at Manjeri Govt Medical College with symptoms resembling Mpox, an illness caused by the monkeypox virus. The 38-year-old man, who had returned from Dubai last week, sought treatment for fever and skin rashes at the medical college's dermatology OP on Monday. Testing is currently underway at Kozhikode Govt Medical College Hospital to confirm the diagnosis, with results expected by Wednesday evening. Health officials have advised the man's family members to remain vigilant as he remains isolated. MPox is classified as a public health emergency by the WHO due to the emergence of a new strain of the virus, though there have been no confirmed cases of this new strain in India thus far.Part of the ongoing global health crisis as reported by the World Health Organization pertains to the first clade of Mpox, which is caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). MPXV is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus within the Poxviridae family. There are two distinct clades of the virus: clade I (including subclades 1a and 1b) and clade II (including subclades 2a and 2b). Mpox can spread through close contact with infected individuals, contaminated objects, or infected animals. Common symptoms of Mpox include rashes, fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
